Scream 7 is a 2026 slasher film. It is a new relaunch of the franchise after the previous two Radio Silence movies, with a creative reboot and a renewed focus on the legacy characters.[1] The film serves as a sequel to Scream VI. It also serves as the seventh installment in the Scream franchise. This is the first movie in the franchise to be directed by Kevin Williamson.

It has no half of the leading actors from the previous film[2], following the controversial dismissal of Melissa Barrera, and the subsequent departure of co-leading actress Jenna Ortega following Barrera's firing.

On October 1, 2024, it was confirmed that the film would be released on February 27, 2026.[3] Filming began on January 7, 2025 and concluded on March 12, 2025.[4][5]

Plot

Synopsis

When a new Ghostface killer emerges in the quiet town where Sidney Prescott has built a new life, her darkest fears are realized as her daughter becomes the next target. Determined to protect her family, Sidney must face the horrors of her past to put an end to the bloodshed once and for all.[6]

Summary

In Woodsboro, Scott, a fan of the Stab movies, takes his girlfriend Madison to the Machers’ house, where murders took place in 1996 and 2022. He mentions rumors that one of the first GhostfacesStu Macher—may have survived after having his head smashed with a TV. Ghostface appears, kills Scott, and stabs Madison, then douses her with gasoline and sets her and the house on fire.

In Pine Grove, Indiana, Sidney Prescott (née Evans) has built a new life for herself: she married police officer Mark Evans, took his last name, runs a coffee shop, and is raising three daughters. The eldest, a teenager named Tatum, is named after Sidney’s deceased friend, Tatum Riley. Sidney receives a call from Ghostface, who appears via video link as an aged Stu, even though he died thirty years ago. He declares his intention to attack Tatum and informs her that he is at the high school theater where she is rehearsing a play with her classmates. When Sidney arrives at the scene with the police, the killer has already fled, having killed Tatum’s friend Hannah, who was playing a fairy, and her classmate Aaron, who was in charge of the safety rope.

The younger daughters are safe with Mark’s mother, and Sidney and her husband plan to take Tatum out of town. However, their plans are doomed to fail—Sidney receives another call from the Ghostface and finds him in her home, where the killer is threatening Tatum with a knife. Mark and Sidney rescue their daughter, but Mark is injured after falling down the stairs. Sidney hides Tatum in the bunker room and uses the emergency exit to leave the house. Ghostface pursues them, but is struck by a car driven by Gale Weathers, who has arrived in Pine Grove with her assistants—Mindy and cameraman Chad Meeks-Martin—after the Machers’ house burned down in Woodsboro.

After the killer is exposed, Sidney recognizes him as the suspicious man who bought coffee from her that morning. The police identify him as Karl Gibbs—a killer who escaped from a nearby psychiatric hospital. Sidney and Gale go there to gather information. One of the staff members, Marco Davis, reports that Stu is a recently released patient who was registered as “John Doe”, lived in the ward next to Karl’s, and remembered nothing about his life before becoming a vagrant in California.

Meanwhile, at the Evans’ house, Mindy notes in a conversation with Tatum that the Ghostface always has a personal connection to his target, and suggests that the girl gather all her friends in one place. Meanwhile, Sidney agrees to give a television interview to Gale to get Stu’s attention, while Tatum and her friends head to a local pizzeria run by the parents of Chloe, Tatum’s other friend. At home, Mark is attacked by the Ghostface and suffers multiple stab wounds.

During a break in the interview, Stu calls Sidney and warns her that he is at the tavern where Tatum and her friends have gathered, forcing Sidney to leave the studio. The Ghostface attacks the students: as Tatum and her boyfriend Ben try to escape, their friends Chloe and Lucas, the Evans’ neighbor, are killed, and Mindy and Chad are injured. Tatum begins to suspect Ben after finding a laptop in his car containing a test for creating a deepfake that changes his face to Stu’s. She hits Ben, he loses consciousness, and she runs away. When the Ghostface finds her, Ben tries to protect Tatum and becomes the killer’s next victim. Tatum takes refuge in Sidney’s coffee shop. After receiving a warning about her arrival via the security system, Sidney calls her daughter and tells her to lock herself in the office and get the gun out of the safe. Following the instructions, Tatum shoots the Ghostface through the walls with guidance from Sidney, who is watching everything on the security cameras. However, when Tatum steps out of the office to shoot him in the head, the killer suddenly rises, and Tatum comes face-to-face with a second Ghostface at the front door. When Sidney arrives at the coffee shop, the place is empty—Stu informs her over the phone that Tatum is being held at their house.

Upon returning home, Sidney sees a message from Stu on TV, who—via AI manipulations creates highly realistic deepfakes as a form of psychological pressure—changes his face to resemble previous Ghostface killers: Nancy Loomis and Roman Bridger, as well as Dewey Riley (the latter drives Sidney over the edge), declaring that he is returning to the roots of the murders—when the victim is forced to watch a loved one being held captive. Sidney goes out into the yard and finds Tatum tied to a chair, while the Ghostface threatens her with a knife. The killer reveals himself: it is Marco, who admits that he used his IT skills to create the images of "Stu". A second Ghostface appears, dragging the wounded Marco behind her, and removes her mask—it is Sidney’s neighbor, Jessica, Lucas’s mother. She explains that, after reading Sidney’s autobiography, she concluded that Sidney had survived by destroying her tormentors, and so she killed her own abusive husband. When Sidney disappeared and wasn’t even present during the Ghostace’s attacks in New York a few years earlier, Jessica was disappointed. After finding out where Sidney had moved, she began visiting the psychiatric hospital, where she met Marco, and then moved in next door to Sidney along with Lucas, whom she killed, deeming him too much like her father.

Jessica declares that she will kill Sidney and then raise Tatum as her own daughter. However, Mark manages to free Tatum’s legs from the tape, and she lunges at Jessica, while Sidney shoots and kills Marco. Jessica runs away, and Sidney tells Tatum to call an ambulance for Mark and not to follow her. Sidney catches up to Jessica, and a fight breaks out between them, ending when Tatum shoots Jessica. Jessica gets back up, but Sidney and Tatum shoot her in the head several times.

After the incident, Mark is taken to the hospital, and Sidney thanks Gale for supporting her and tells Tatum about her namesake. With Gale’s approval, Mindy delivers an impromptu report on the night’s events.

Cast & Characters

Production

Development

In interviews conducted for Scream VI, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett revealed that they have hopes that Neve Campbell would return in the "future" and that conversations with her have happened. On March 6, 2022, ScreenGeek confirmed that a seventh film had officially been greenlit.[31] Production is set to begin in 2023, with Paramount Pictures hoping to have the same turnaround time as Scream VI.

In August 2023, Christopher Landon was confirmed as director of Scream 7.[32]

Barrera Dismissal and Backlash

In November 2023, Melissa Barrera was "quietly dropped" from the project due to comments posted on social media made in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war in support of Palestinian relief.[33]

Less than 24 hours later, it was announced Jenna Ortega would not return either, with scheduling conflicts for Wednesday cited as the official reason.[34] This will be the first movie in the new branch of the franchise (after Scream 4 (2011)) that does not feature the Carpenter sisters in the lead roles.

The decision to dismiss Barrera sparked fan backlash, with threats of boycotting the project. She received a waive of support from Scream fans, her co-star Ortega privately, and fellow actor Rowan Blanchard publicly.[35] It has been compared to a waive of other dismissals in Hollywood for speaking out against the genocide in Gaza", namely Maha Dakhil, Susan Sarandon, and more.[35]

Christopher Landon, who is set to direct, wrote in a now-deleted post on X: “Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make".[36] He later announced he exited the project weeks prior, in December 2023, after toxic behavior and threats from some of Barrera's stans.[37]

Christopher Landon's resignation as director

In December 23, Landon stepped down as director following the backlash and controversy surrounding Barrera's firing: "I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago. This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on. I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes’ legacy thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world. What he and Kevin created is something amazing and I was honored to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow".[38] Landon faced inadequate online activity from users posing as Barrera fans, and experienced insults and threats against himself and his family from them, despite the fact that he had nothing to do with Barrera's firing and the studio's decisions.[39]

The return of Neve Campbell and Kevin Williamson as director

On March 12th, Neve Campbell officially announced her return as Sidney Prescott on her Instagram: "Hi All. I’m so excited to announce this news!!! Sidney Prescott is coming back!!!! It’s always been such a blast and an honor to get to play Sidney in the ‘Scream‘ movies. My appreciation for these films and for what they have meant to me, has never waned. I’m very happy and proud to say I’ve been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn’t be more thrilled!!! Well actually I could. While I’ve been so incredibly lucky to make these films with both the master of horror Wes Craven and the wonderfully talented Matt and Tyler team, I’ve dreamt for many years of how amazing it would be to make one of these movies with Kevin Williamson at the helm. And now it’s happening, Kevin Williamson is going to direct ‘Scream 7‘! This was his baby and it’s his brilliant mind that dreamt up this world. Kevin is not just an inspiration as an artist but has been a dear friend for many years. To the amazing ‘Scream‘ fans, I hope you are as excited as I am. See you on set @kevwilliamson".[40]

At the same time, Kevin Williamson also spoke out on his Instagram: "It’s been nearly 30 years since my very first script, Scream, was directed by the legendary Wes Craven. I never would have predicted what it would become. Or that I would be directing the seventh installment of the franchise. I am overcome with gratitude and excitement, and I can’t wait to take this journey with Neve and the entire Scream family as we bring back Sidney Prescott in the next chapter of the Scream franchise. Thank you to all the Scream fans. You are the gift that keeps giving".[41]

Casting

On November 21, 2024, it was announced that Isabel May will play one of Sidney's daughters, Tatum Evand. Courteney Cox's return as Gale Weathers has also been confirmed.[42] On December 2, Celeste O'Connor joined the cast.[43] On December 6, it was also reported that Asa Germann joined the cast. On December 12, it was announced that McKenna Grace will be in the film, confirming early rumors of her involvement in the project.[44] On December 13, it was announced that The Fabelmans star Sam Rechner has been cast in the movie.[45] On December 16, it was revealed that Mason Gooding will reprise his role as Chad Meeks-Martin in Scream 7.[46] On December 17, it was announced that Anna Camp had joined the cast.[47] On December 18, Courteney Cox's comeback was officially announced.[48] This was known already, but it was not directly confirmed by media before.[49] On January 16, 2025, it was officially announced that Joel McHale had landed the role and would play Mark Evans, Sidney's husband. This officially and definitively signaled that Patrick Dempsey would not return to reprise the role of Mark Kincaid[50], because his talks with the studio were unsuccessful.[51] On the same day it was announced that Jasmin Savoy Brown will return to the role of Mindy Meeks-Martin, joining the cast alongside her on-screen brother Mason Gooding.[52] On January 28, it was revealed that Mark Consuelos has gotten the role.[53] On January 30, it was announced that both Scott Foley[54] and Matthew Lillard[55] had signed on to the movie. It is expected that they will reprise the roles of Roman Bridger and Stu Maсher respectively (in one form or another).[56] On February 3, it was announced that Ethan Embry had joined the cast.[57] On March 4, David Arquette's return as Dewey Riley was officially confirmed.[58] This marks the return of all the actors from the Original Trio to the project after the absence of Cambpell and Arquette in Scream VI.[59] On March 10, it was announced that Michelle Randolph and Jimmy Tatro had joined the cast.[60] On October 30th, it was revealed that actor Tim Simons would also be cast in an undisclosed role.[61]

Start of filming

Filming on the movie officially began on January 8. At the same time, Kevin Williamson made a post in his Instagram in favor of this event: "I’m not supposed to post about Scream and I hope @spyglassmediagr and @paramountpics will forgive me but when you have one of the best days of your life it’s really hard to keep it to yourself. What an extraordinary day I had working with an amazing and talented cast and crew. They brought their ‘A’ game and had my back every step of the way. I’m so very grateful for this opportunity and to Wes Craven who was on my mind through it all. The profound impact he has had on my life and career is endless. What a day! I can’t wait for tomorrow! #scream7".[62]

  21. Despite his character's demise in Scream (2022) David Arquette has repeatedly made it clear that a return of Dewey in one form or another is still possible. Arquette also expressed interest and expectations over Scream 7 and once again stated that he is always open and willing to play Dewey in any way. Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox have repeatedly stated their disappointment about the past creative team's decision to kill off Dewey. The latter expressed in an interview that she wants Dewey to return in Scream 7: ‘They have to figure it out’. It's worth noting that the Scream franchise has already had precedents with posthumous character comebacks (Arquette's colleagues Lynn McRee, Jamie Kennedy, Skeet Ulrich and Jack Quaid reprised their roles in all sorts of ways after their characters died).
